Background Note
In the same year, an Oil and Natural Gas Directorate was set up as a subordinate office under the then Ministry of Natural Resources and Scientific Research. In August 1956, the Directorate was elevated to the status of a commission and named the Oil and Natural Gas Commission.
6] Assam Oil Company was incorporated in 1889 as a
separate wing of the British owned Assam Railway and Treading Company
Limited (AR&T Co. Ltd.) to look after petroleum exploration and extraction
work. It started its operations at Digboi oilfield, the first oilfield
discovered in India (in 1889). |
